Flights
-
Motorcycle clothing and helmet: It is possible to buy these items in Japan, of course, but if that is the plan, we recommend leaving plenty of time to buy the right things. In particular, an unfamiliar or uncomfortable helmet may reduce the enjoyment of the ride. You will need appropriate clothing and personal hygiene equipment for the tour.
-
Health/travel insurance
-
Most meals: We will have a very grand and authentic meal at a restaurant in Yufuin towards the end of the tour. Also, some hotels offer breakfast as part of the room fee. Otherwise, riders will pay for their own meals. There will be a wide range of options available as we travel around – sushi, various noodles, traditional Japanese fare and western food.
-
Wifi: It is very easy and inexpensive to pick up a portable wifi router at airports in Japan. These can be used for the duration of your trip and returned to the collection point at the end.
Frequently Asked Questions.

1. Do I need a special licence?
You will need an international driver's license which allows you to ride a motorcycle in Japan. If you do not have this when you arrive and cannot obtain one, you will not be able to participate in the tour. We will not be able to offer refunds in this instance
2. Can I get vegetarian food?
Not really. Japan is not an easy place in which to be vegetarian or vegan. It's not impossible, of course, but we cannot guarantee access to vegetarian or vegan options while on the road.
3. Should I get the Japanese encephalitis vaccine?
This is entirely a personal choice. We are not medical professionals and are unable to advise on this.
4. What if I require medication?
If you regularly take medication, you should bring enough with your to cover the duration of the tour. If you turn up for the tour without your required medication it may put at risk your ability to join the ride.
5. Can my partner ride pillion?
We have designed the tour with one person per bike in mind. The luggage goes on the back. However, it is possible we may be able to add a passenger. Please contact us directly.
6. Can my friends and I book a tour just for us?
We are happy to take group bookings. The minimum number is 6 people.
7. What weather can we expect?
We have chosen May and October as the times for the tour primarily because the weather is optimal, averaging 15 - 24 degrees celsius (that's 59 to 75 degrees fahrenheit for our American friends.) Also, in principle, these two times of year avoid both the rainy season and the typhoon season. However, this is the weather so it doesn't fall under the "things we control" section so you will need a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers and waterproof footwear. On the October 2024 trip we had a couple of days with rain. It was fine because (a) it was a hardy bunch of chaps and (b) we all had wet weather gear, but those days would have been a lot less fun if we'd been soaked.
8. Should I wear motorcycle boots?
Not necessary. The bikes we ride have a see-saw gearshift, so you don't have to tuck your foot under the gear shift to change gear. Normal trainers are fine as long as you have a pair of waterproof shoes in case the heavens open. If you arrive in the country with enough time to spare and your feet are not massive, you may find that you can get a decent pair of waterproof ankle boots at one of the workwear stores that sell clothing for labourers. These are lightweight, easy to slip on and don't cost very much.
