Nagasaki! A unique city, not only because of its tragic history in the 20th century. Located on a bay in the very western part of Kyushu and surrounded on three sides by mountains, it is pretty hard to get to. The geography has dictated the layout of the city with the main centre at the sea and suburbs rising up in the valleys that shoot out to the north. We spent the day visiting the Peace Park, Atomic Bomb Musuem, Glover Garden and Dejima. The park and museum memorialising what happened on 9th of August 1945 are sobering but very informative. Glover Garden is pretty cool and offers great views over the harbour. Dejima is superb - a tiny manmade island where the only westerners permitted to reside in Japan during time of Japan's isolation period (1639-1854) were forced to stay. No riding today - Nagasaki is a whole day or exploration.
